The basic Rolfing® 10 sessions

Direct access to better Movement

Rolfing is a process that works therapeutically and is most effective in the context of a series of Sessions. The Basic 10 Structural sessions were created by Dr. Ida Rolf, through which one’s posture and movement are systematically addressed to achieve better organization, balance, and a sense of well-being.

Normally and most often Structural sessions are embedded with Rolfing Movement sessions to help establish a new understanding and a growing level of awareness in experiencing one’s body, it’s habitual patterns and surroundings.

You can get familiar with the basic Structural 10-Series sessions through the three phases of the process as shown below, and then read the Functional counterpart, as both goes hand in hand, together.

Sessions 1-3

During the “sleeve” sessions of session 1-3, surface layers of fascia are addressed in order to free the breath.

Specifically, the first session is devoted to enhancing the quality of breath with work on the arms, ribcage and diaphragm. Opening is also started along the upper leg, hamstrings, neck and spine.

The second session helps to give the body a stable foundation by balancing the foot and tissues of the lower leg.

The third session typically involves a “side view” for an understanding of how the head, shoulder girdle, and hips are positionally related to one another when standing under the influence of gravity. Then, the body is addressed within the context of this new vision.

Sessions 4-7

Sessions 4-7 are referred to as “core” sessions and examine terrain found between the bottom of the pelvis and top of the head. The idea of core also includes the deep tissue of the legs for its role in support.

Session four begins this journey, its territory extends from the inside arch of the foot and up the leg, to the bottom of the pelvis.

The fifth session is concerned with balancing surface and deep abdominal muscles to the curve of the back.

Session six seeks to enlist more support and movement from the legs, pelvis and lower back, while the seventh session turns its sole attention to the neck and head.

Session 8-10

“Integration” is emphasised throughout the remaining three sessions, as session 8-10 provide an opportunity for the practitioner to blend previously established advancements, and ones yet to be made into the body in a way that encourages smooth movement and natural coordination.

During sessions eight and nine, the practitioner determines how best to achieve this integration, as the protocol is unique for each individual.

The tenth session is also one of integration, but more importantly, serves to inspire a sense of order and balance in the whole experience of a person. Once completed, after combined with Rolfing Movement Education, the wisdom of the Rolfing Ten Series will drive and support the body with health for years to come.

What to expect

Rolfing Sessions typically last a little over an hour but may take up to 90 minutes. At the beginning and end of each session, we look at structural and functional elements by performing some movements to observe, learn, and feel the changes that are occurring before and after the session.

Mindful Movement and exercises
Rolfing clients have an active role. The benefits of the Rolfing process are greater when the client performs specific movements led by the Rolfer, observing qualities in their inner experience.

During the course of the 10 Structural sessions and the complementing Rolfing Movement sessions, a client will be presented with a number of activities to look at during their daily life or a series of movement exercises designed to enhance the work that was done during the session. Following these activities can assist to link the sessions as well as maximizing the benefits of the work.

Rolfing is a process
Rolfing is an approach. It is served best and is most effective in the context of a series of sessions, working to facilitate a better alignment and function and see how that resonates and coordinates with one’s system. Whether in acute or chronic pain, it tends to relieve the most painful symptoms in restricted Fascia and increases energy levels and vitality for a change that can last. Often there is a great change occurring already during the first sessions.

Every session organizes the next to come and the body’s restrictive postures and movement patterns change. Appreciate the overall picture and be mindful of the process. In most cases results of the sessions taken are cumulative.

In general, it is most helpful to approach the Rolfing process or any other service provided on this platform, with generosity for oneself and kindness.

Open Communication
Communicate openly with regard to how the work feels during sessions and agreed-upon comfort zones. Your level of comfort is a leading guide and is always respected.

Underwear for all genders with comfortable access to the skin is best. Appropriate attire is underwear and a bra. Refrain boxer-shorts. thick materials or tight Yoga leggings. Brief-style underwear is best. Please omit sports-type bras, as they may limit access to the ribcage.
